Felcie Pujol, your great-grandmother, was born in June, 1867, the child of Louis Pujol and Sophie Soudé. They were both about fourteen years of age.
Little is known of the Pujol family and more information may become available as additional volumes of Archdiosan Sacramental Records are published.
The Pujol line began with Pierre Pujol and his wife Catherine Dutreuil of Bordeau, France. They moved to Saint Domingue, but fled to New Orleans during the slave revolt. With them came a son, Jean Pujol (c 1780 - 24 Apr. 1820) and his son Sebastian Pujol (c 1807 - 25 Oct 1832) The wives of these men are not mentioned.
Sebastian was the father of I.G. Pujol and grandfather of Louis Pujol. I.G. Pujol married Martha Morse. All of the Pujols were white.
After Louis sired the child, Felicie, the Pujols recognised his paternity and Martha Morse offered to raise the child. She took her to their home in St. Tammany Parish. Felicie lived with her grandmother, Martha Morse, who was generally known as Madam "Boss." This nickname may have derived from a confusion with the name "Morse."
Oral history states that when Sophie Soudé married Ernest Durel, Felicie went to live with her mother. This is an inaccuracy. Sophie and Ernest were married, according to the census of 1900, in 1894. Sophie had lived with her mother for about ten years prior to that date.
